Yaupon, holds a rich history entwined with indigenous traditions in the southeastern United States and Northern Mexico, where it played a significant role as an important food item, medicinal herb, and ceremonial ritual practiced by indigenous people for thousands of years. Indigenous people, European colonists, and early American settlers all drank Yaupon before it faded into obscurity hundreds of years ago. In 1789, a botanist named William Aiton gave yaupon the Latin name Ilex vomitoria after hearing reports of Native purification ceremonies where large amounts of the tea were consumed, sometimes followed by ritual purging. In reality, yaupon tea itself does not cause vomiting — the name was more myth than fact. Unfortunately, the label discouraged many from appreciating this remarkable plant for centuries. Today, yaupon is being rediscovered as a smooth, naturally caffeinated tea with a rich cultural heritage and a bright future.
