History:
Yaupon, holds a rich history entwined with indigenous traditions in the southeastern United States and Northern Mexico, where it played a significant role as an important food item, medicinal herb, and ceremonial ritual practiced by indigenous people for thousands of years. Indigenous people, European colonists, and early American settlers all drank Yaupon before it faded into obscurity hundreds of years ago. North America's only native caffeinated and drought-tolerant plant, Yaupon has been revered for its delicious taste, uplifting health properties, and incredible history dating over thousands of years. Today, it is celebrated not only for its caffeine content but also for its ecological benefits, historical significance, and unique flavor profile, thus honoring its past while embracing a sustainable and culturally significant future. Yaupon has no tannins, and serves up a healthy dose of theophylline and theobromine, which complement the caffeine to provide a smooth and jitter-free energy boost with no crash. Like its South American cousins, the Yerba Mate or Guayusa, Yaupon has dozens of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, polyphenols, and antioxidants to fortify the body and calm the mind. Enjoy the delicate flavor of green yaupon with its own herbal notes and hint of grassy flavor profile or the malty and caramel cup of the dark roast yaupon.* In 1789, a botanist named William Aiton gave yaupon the Latin name Ilex vomitoria after hearing reports of Native purification ceremonies where large amounts of the tea were consumed, sometimes followed by ritual purging. In reality, yaupon tea itself does not cause vomiting — the name was more myth than fact. Unfortunately, the label discouraged many from appreciating this remarkable plant for centuries. Today, yaupon is being rediscovered as a smooth, naturally caffeinated tea with a rich cultural heritage and a bright future. *These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA.
